Accutane (isotretionoin) is intended for the treatment of severe nodular acne and can be taken only by people participating in the special iPLEDGE program to whom this medicine was prescribed by their health care provider. Before you can start taking Accutane you will have to have 2 negative pregnancy tests. Using two different methods of birth control during the whole period of treatment and one month after it is supposed to help you to avoid getting pregnant, as this drug has been reported to cause severe birth defects in babies. Contact your health care provider if you or any family members taking tretinoin experience any of the following serious mental symptoms: loss of interest in some activities, crying spells, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, sleeping more than you used to, sadness, anxiety and poor performance at work.
